STT: How did you become involved in the industry?

Dr. Antonio: I started writing for bodybuilding magazines while in graduate school (early 1990s).

STT: What is your specialization? Feel free to expand upon your job responsibilities, interests or current project you are working on.

Dr. Antonio: My focus is on sports nutrition and supplements. I don’t do ‘wellness.’ I don’t do ‘health.’ But I love the performance aspect of sports and how supplementation and nutrition can be of help. I currently run the International Society of Sports Nutrition (the ONLY academic society dedicated to sports nutrition). I am also the host of 3 different radio shows: The Weekend Workout, The Performance Nutrition Show and the Strength-Power Hour. I write for virtually all the major consumer publications in the ‘fitness’ genre (i.e. Muscle and Fitness, Ironman, Fitness Rx, Muscular Development to name a few). Furthermore, I’m the Editor in Chief of two consumer magazines (Inside Fitness and Sports Nutrition Insider) and of an academic journal (The Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition). I also currently serve as the sports science advisor to VPX Sports. Additionally, I’m in the process of writing an academic text and a super cool consumer book geared towards the masses. I get bored easily; hence, the need to have umpteen projects on my plate.

And there’s more to come! If I told you everything, then there’d be no surprise. 🙂

STT: What aspect of the field do you enjoy the most? Feel free to elaborate and provide multiple examples.

Dr. Antonio: Meeting smart and creative people and working with them.

STT: What advice would you have for those wishing to become a part of the industry?

Dr. Antonio: Write, write and write; first get your start writing scientifically; and then work like the dickens to get into consumer pubs.

STT: For today’s nutrition specialist, what type of academic and professional training can optimize a young person’s chances for success in the field?

Dr. Antonio: First, get the formal education; at least a 4 year degree in exercise science and/or nutrition. Then NETWORK like crazy; meet the influencers of the field.

STT: What advice do you give athletes on hydration? Does that advice change for different sports?

Dr. Antonio: Drink a sports drink if the event lasts more than 75 min. If it doesn’t, then drink H20.

STT: What would you tell someone who wants to keep up with current research from sport scientist? What ideas do you have for initiating such contacts?

Dr. Antonio: READ, READ, and read some more. Follow the science; there are NO short cuts.

STT: What approaches are most likely to be successful in keeping players well nourished and well hydrated during road trips?

Dr. Antonio: No quick fixes here; you need to eat clean and remain hydrated at all times.

STT: Who in the field has had the most impact on you and why?

Dr. Antonio: Probably my dissertation advisor, William J. Gonyea, PhD.; mainly because I admired his maverick attitude. Besides, if you’re going to do what everyone else does, then you’ll be like everyone else. Who wants that? That’s boring. Be a maverick.
